If I were in charge of the world
I’d make Chocolate a vitamin, and Ice Cream a food group
and lima beans bad for you.
I’d cure mean people, wars, and cancer.

If I were in charge of the world
There’d be laughing required everywhere, especially
in the Congress and the Senate
and balloons, all colors of balloons, and glitter.

If I were in charge of the world
You wouldn’t have to watch your diet because everything that tastes good would be good for you and have low calories.

If I were in charge of the world.

You wouldn’t have “Lonely” or “Lost”
You wouldn’t have to stop dancing or jumping on the bed , even if you were 100.
Or get yelled at for singing too loud.

If I were in charge of the world there would be so many happy people that “Gay” would mean “everyone” and human beings would be equal in every way.

If I were in charge of the world , people would be with the one they love forever and ever and no one could say anything because if I were in charge of the world the only rule would be LOVE each other.

My dining room was full of people laughing when Harry walked in. He had arrived in Maine from New Jersey for a meeting of the Names Project Aids Memorial Quilt. He was our Regional Rep and we were pleased to have him travel so far to be with us.

Harry was special. Physically, he was almost too beautiful to bear. He had white blonde hair, the brightest green eyes anywhere and a smile that stopped the hearts of man, woman and animal alike. We called him, behind his back, “Be Still My Heart Harry.”

He was also the most compassionate and loving of men.

Our meeting went well.

My sons and their friends wandered in and out of the room. My husband made us tea and was obviously pleased with the gathering. My elder son’s partner came home from work ,was introduced, collected his welcome hugs from “Dad” and me, and went out to cook something wonderful in the kitchen adjacent.

The gathering dispersed, and Harry and I sat at the table talking. He looked at me with tears in his eyes.

“I’m just so glad,” he said. “I am so happy to see that the ‘boys’ are just a regular part of the family. I was thrown out of my house when I was 15 years old. My Connecticut and Catholic family would not have a gay son.”

The rest of the story goes like this. Harry made a success of his business life, becoming a leader in a huge national company. He was an activist, a help to many and the kind of man we all hope our sons will someday become.

He had written and called his parents over the years to no response. He thought he was now ‘good enough’ so they could be proud of him, at 39 years old, 25 years since they had seen him.

On his way to us, he stopped at the great white house with the landscaped gardens. He parked on the street, took a huge bouquet of flowers for his mother and walked bravely up to that front door. He felt 14 again.

He rang the bell. The door opened and there stood his distinguished father.

The man who answered the door looked at him. As Harry began to speak, he slammed the door in his face.

Harry waited. Perhaps his mother would come. Perhaps he could see her.

After awhile, he rang the bell again. This time they both stood there. Harry reached out. His mother did speak. She said, “You are not my son.” The door closed for the last time on two faces that Harry loved anyway.

Harry drove on to Maine and into our lives, into the crazy mixed up family that just loved everyone.

He said before he left that we gave him hope. I told him that he was the son everyone wanted and that I wish he had been mine, too.

Harry had a way of stopping traffic of stunning a room into silence by walking in. He was not vain, or proud. He just sent out a smile that reached into every heart.

Every heart. Except two.
